Sunsail and Helly Hansen partner for Hamilton Island Race Week

We are very excited to announce the establishment of a great partnership with Sunsail. Founded in 1974, Sunsail are the largest sailing and watersports holiday company, delivering great sailing holidays with a cutting edge fleet, in the worlds best cruising grounds.

Helly Hansen will be teaming up with Sunsail across several areas, including Australia's premier big boat regatta, Hamilton Island Race week. Situated in the picturesque Whitsundays, Hamilton Island plays host Australia’s premier big boat regatta - Celebrating it's 30th anniversary, boasting a fleet of 150 plus entrants and some of the most beautiful sailing grounds on offer. During race week Sunsail have 15 of their finest yachts chartered for the regatta and Helly Hansen will be ensuring Sunsail staff and clients are suitably attired for a big week on and off the water.
Race Week dates back to 1983 when David Hutchen, an ex Melbourne man who had moved to the Whitsundays to start his own business with his yacht “Banjo Paterson”. He had become friendly with the owner of Hamilton Island at the time, Keith Williams, and when David suggested it, Keith agreed to host a regatta at Hamilton Island – and so Race Week was born.

For the first eight years Race Week was held in April, starting on the first Saturday after Easter. Southern boats sailed up the coast in the Sydney-Mooloolaba, and then the Brisbane-Gladstone at Easter, then made their way to Hamilton Island. After a few years of holding Race Week in April with mixed weather conditions, it was moved to August in 1992 when the weather is much more settled and it is also a more appealing time of year for Southern sailors to leave their winter home and head for the tropics. Since then it has gone from strength to strength to its present position of being Australia's premier keelboat regatta.
